AAP: Evidence too limited to recommend leucovorin broadly for autistic children

American Academy of Pediatrics issues guidance on leucovorin (folinic acid): The AAP does not recommend routine use of leucovorin (folinic acid) for autistic children due to limited evidence on its safety and effectiveness, according to new interim guidance. “The reason the AAP is not broadly recommending leucovorin is because we know that autistic children deserve the same level of evidence to support interventions for them as anyone else,” said Kristin Sohl, M.D., FAAP, a member of the AAP Council on Children with Disabilities Executive Committee and immediate past chair of its Autism Subcommittee. “So, we are looking for the appropriate level of study to go into a medication intervention before recommending it broadly." In the interim guidance Use of Leucovorin in Autistic Pediatric Patients and an accompanying FAQ for pediatric prescribing cliniciansthe AAP expresses support for continued research into promising therapies and provides recommendations for talking to families about leucovorin.
