Alex A. Cardoni is Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from the University at Buffalo and Masters Degree in Hospital Pharmacy from the The Ohio State University. He completed a 2-year residency in Hospital Pharmacy at OSU Hospitals in Columbus and developed a psychopharmacology consultation service at Ohio State in 1970. In 1972, Professor Cardoni established the statewide Drug Information Service at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy and directed the University-based Poison Control Center from 1976-84. He was psychopharmacology consultant to the UConn Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program from 1979-87 and later established consultation services to Hartford Hospital Department of Psychiatry (1987-94) and The Institute of Living (1994-2008). In academia, Professor Cardoni led UConn’s transition to the entry-level Pharm D curriculum, chaired the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and quadruple the number of full-time pharmacy practice faculty. Research areas have included drug and poison information service utilization, epidemiology of drug interactions, and tobacco use in psychiatric patients. He was Board Certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy in 1997 and is a Founding Member of CPNP, serving as its second President from 1999-2000. Among his numerous awards, the Boelhoewer Award for Psychiatric Patient Care and Teaching and the Paul G. Pierpaoli Award for long-term contributions to pharmacy practice are most significant. Professor Cardoni retired from the University of Connecticut in 2001. He continues to provide psychiatric consultant services to The Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut. Professor Cardoni resides with his wife Jeanette in Ellington, Connecticut.
