Trauma and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD): Exploring the Complicated Relationship Between PTSD and AUD

Course Description

Delve deeper into the history of trauma exposure (e.g., combat-related, sexual-related, violence) and its implications on development of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and comorbid alcohol use disorder (AUD). Explore the link between substance use as an attempt to self-medicate trauma symptoms. Lastly, analyze the evidence supporting preferred treatment strategies and risk/benefit of medications for patients with a co-occurring AUD.

Learning Objectives

  1. Evaluate the prevalence of AUD in patients with PTSD and the impact of these co-occurring conditions on recovery prognosis.
  2. Analyze the literature describing the pharmacologic management of comorbid PTSD and AUD.
  3. Determine optimal pharmacotherapeutic treatment plans for patients with PTSD and co-occurring AUD.

Theresa Frey, PharmD, BCPP is a clinical pharmacy practitioner (CPP) in mental health and the residency director of the PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency program at the William S. Middleton VA in Madison, WI. She currently she works on the substance use disorders (SUD) team and her CPP role is considered a strong practice in the VA system. Her interest areas include resident/student mentoring, substance use disorders, overdose prevention, and motivational interviewing. She is also a co-chair of the PBM Clinical Pharmacy Practice Office SUD Pharmacy Subject Matter Expert (SME) Workgroup, which supports standardization and expansion of the SUD clinical pharmacy practice in VA.
