Monitoring and Treatment of Depression in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Course Description

Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have increased risk for developing MDD and this relationship is bidirectional, with similar mechanisms linking the disease states. Guidelines and organizations provide recommendations for depression screening in patients with DM. Several studies evaluated the safety and efficacy of antidepressants for treatment of MDD in patients with DM. However, not all clinicians are familiar with the literature and may be uncertain about preferred depression monitoring and treatment options. This presentation will address how psychiatric pharmacists can help address this gap as psychotropic medication experts and provide recommendations. The presentation will also discuss why this overlap with MDD and DM is so common and how we can help destigmatize it. Knowledge about the treatment of these co-occurring conditions is beneficial so that patients receive proper treatment regardless of the setting in which they seek care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Create a diabetes distress or depression screening plan for patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the primary care setting.
  2. Recommend strategies to reduce stressors contributing to a patient's diabetes distress.
  3. Develop a plan to optimize treatment for patients with depression and DM.
