Course Description
Nearly half of all people who die by suicide have a primary care appointment in the month prior. This demonstrates a key opportunity to implement suicide risk screenings in the primary care setting. Suicide screening tools have been validated in outpatient primary care clinics and it is recommended that patients who screen positive receive brief suicide risk assessment and safety planning and assessment. One educational component to incorporate during a brief intervention is Lethal Means Safety Counseling (LMSC), which aims to build a patient-centered alliance that mitigates access to is defined as any objects that can be used invoke self-directed violence. Studies demonstrate the value of having a psychiatric pharmacist complete suicide screens and assessments, but also draw attention to the need of advancement in provider education regarding LMSC. This presentation will focus on factors that influence suicide risk, assessment of suicide risk level and access to lethal means, and treatments plans that mitigate risk and limit access to lethal means.
