Breaking New Ground in 2024 Thanks to 2023 Year-End Campaign Success

Breaking New Ground

Pushing the envelope, charting new territory, blazing trails… all are apt descriptors for AAPP Foundation in 2024 as we not only support our ongoing research and student grants but additionally partner with our parent association, the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP), to launch the Outcomes Initiative Research Grant Program!

Our Investment in the Future of Psychiatric Pharmacy

We are investing major dollars to evaluate the impact of psychiatric pharmacists on mental health care. AAPP has committed up to $500,000 to the Foundation to fund research to generate high-quality large sample size (n) data sets that evaluate the impact of integrating psychiatric pharmacists into team-based mental health care. This RFP seeks to fund two high-quality, multi-site research proposals, each with an impressive maximum budget of $250,000.

Proving the Value of Psychiatric Pharmacists

Psychiatric pharmacists have a long history of innovation which has resulted in an amazing diversity of practice settings and patient populations. Unfortunately, this leads to small-n studies which can’t be aggregated. The lack of large-n, high-quality studies creates a significant barrier to advocacy on behalf of the profession. Within the broader Outcomes Initiative, AAPP and AAPP Foundation seek to:

  1. Standardize Outcomes: Initial work is complete! Learn more about the Core Outcome Set for Psychiatric Pharmacists (COS-PP) at aapp.fyi/cos-pp.
  2. Standardize Reporting: Volunteers are building on the COS-PP work by developing a reporting guideline and logic model to encourage consistent reporting of study characteristics needed for effective replication/aggregation.
  3. Increase Research Through Training of Researchers: AAPP has released the Clinical Research Toolkit to help pharmacists integrate research into their practices and to support multi-site projects in particular.
  4. Increase Collaboration Between Researchers: The research grant RFP requires multi-site studies and the inclusion of multiple investigators, which will improve research in the specialty beyond the initial studies.
  5. Provide Funding: Up to $250,000 will be invested per study that will advance the Outcomes Initiative.

The Bottom Line

Not a One-and-Done

This initial investment will start us on the path to improved quality data but multiple studies and years of investment in this effort will be necessary to turn the tide in public policy to garner recognition of psychiatric pharmacists as mental health providers. Together, we can get there. Through your contributions to AAPP Foundation, we can support efforts to grow our reserves to support not only the 2024 Outcomes Initiative Research Grant but future grant offerings as well. We all know the impact we make and the value we bring to the treatment team. With your contribution to the AAPP Foundation, join us in showing everyone else.
