Overall Educational Goals and Specific Learning Objectives

  • Relate the cognitive domains that each of several neuropsychological tests evaluate to functional areas of the brain and relate scoring to functional ability.
  • Evaluate the treatment options for maintenance therapy of bipolar disorder.
  • Identify associated medical target symptoms, factors affecting epidemiology, and evidence-based treatments of various eating disorders.
  • Discuss the pathophysiology, medication management, and monitoring outcomes of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Identify treatment resistant schizophrenia, strategies for assessing clinical response, and pharmacological management with antipsychotics and adjunctive medications.
  • Describe the evolution of psychiatric diagnosis/treatment and the major developments of clinical psychopharmacology over the past decade.
  • Discuss the importance of nutrition, exercise, and sleep on brain functioning and the impact of substance abuse and hormone changes on psychiatric disorders.
  • Explain how traumatic brain injury impacts cholinergic and noradrenergic functioning (e.g., cognitive impairments and behavioral changes) and why specific treatment strategies may be helpful.
  • Define assessment techniques, pharmacotherapy options, and monitoring parameters for various sleep disorders.
  • Describe the effectiveness and implementation of non-pharmacologic interventions for sleep disorders.
  • Explain the differences in pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and dosing of prescription, non-prescription, and investigational drugs for insomnia.
  • Identify, assess, and recommend treatment for the most common chronic medical, neurologic, and psychiatric conditions, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, osteoporosis, ADHD, anxiety disorders, psychosis, dementia, and mood disorders in the aging mentally retarded and developmentally disabled patient.
  • Describe forensic psychiatry practice including common practice areas, definitions of common terms, and the role of the pharmacist, including cost containment efforts.
  • Discuss the components of medication therapy management in the multidisciplinary treatment of forensic patients and how the role has changed over the last decade.
  • Compare and contrast forensic interviewing and expert testimony techniques with a standard mental status exam and the challenges of obtaining objective information in the forensic setting.
  • Develop optimal treatment plans in managing diabetes and hypertension to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
  • Compare and contrast novel, future therapies based on neuroscience and pharmacogenomics, of schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Continuing Education Credit

The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The 2007 Annual Meeting will provide up to 15 contact hours of continuing education credit from CPNP approved programming. The pre-meeting workshop and home-study programming are provided for an additional 3 and 13 hours, respectively. Additional ACPE hours will be available through five industry supported satellite symposia.

Participants must verify their attendance at the programming and complete evaluations and self-assessment questions in order to request ACPE credit. Statements of credit will be retrieved by participants online at the CPNP website within one month following the event.

Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, practitioner, educator, scientist, administrator, student, resident, fellow, nurse practitioner or other healthcare professional involved in the pharmaceutical care of psychiatric and/or neurological patients, we invite you to attend the CPNP Annual Meeting. Through this meeting, practitioners at all levels in the areas of neurology and psychiatry can grow and improve in their specialty areas. The Annual Meeting also benefits those pharmacists who play an ever-increasing role in assuring appropriate drug use, providing overall pharmacotherapy management and enhancing positive outcomes. More importantly, the Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for all attendees to interact and share experiences regarding their areas of common interest.

Attire: Business casual attire is recommended throughout the Annual Meeting except for the Banquet when business attire is recommended.
