Marine-sourced omega-3 fatty acids help lower risk of cardiovascular disease as per the American Heart Association recommendation of 2 to 4 g of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – Omega-3 per day, for patients requiring a reduction in their triglyceride level. (1)   This and most others have focused in marine-sourced omega-3 fatty acid research on fish and fish oils.

Krill omega-3 is now emerging as the next generation leader in marine-sourced omega-3.  This is primarily due to research suggesting krill oil’s more effective/efficient delivery of omega-3, and its ability to positively address more parameters of the lipid profile, and other cardiovascular risk factors. (2, 3)

Onemia™’s composition and molecular structure are significantly different to that of fish oil, pointing to unique clinical benefits.  In fish, the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3s (EPA/DHA) are attached to triglycerides.  In Onemia™, they are attached to phospholipids, mostly phosphatidylcholine, thus providing better absorption in plasma and red blood cells. Furthermore, phospholipids are the major component of cell membranes and essential for all vital cell processes. They are one of the principle constituents of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and play, as such, an important role in modulating cholesterol efflux.  Onemia™ also contains the carotenoid astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant clinically proven to be significantly more potent than most recognized antioxidants like vitamin E, CoQ10 and lycopene. Fish oil does not contain antioxidants, which explains their vulnerability to oxidation partly responsible for the unpleasant aftertaste which in turn leads to reduced compliance. The phospholipids in Onemia™ facilitate absorption and bioavailability of omega-3s and antioxidants. […]

AAOSH in Boston by Daniel Bobrow

The last weekend in September found me in at Boston’s Renaissance Waterfront Hotel for the AAPP’s Annual Summit on Concierge Medicine.  While the weather may have been inconsistent, the caliber of presenters was anything but.

I was invited to attend by virtue of my position as Founding Board Member of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH), whose Mission, as the website states, is “…to improve inter-disciplinary healthcare and collaboration, and the health of people everywhere by changing public and professional awareness of the mouth-body health links.”

This means gaining a deeper appreciation for and ability to practice what I term the Three Cs:

Clinical – mastery of the skills to detect markers for systemic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy complications, etc. and either treat or refer patients as appropriate to physicians for further testing and treatment
Collaborative – development, cultivation and nurture of a comprehensive network of healthcare providers

and

Communication – the necessary skill set and resources to educate and persuade current and prospective patients to value and ‘say yes’ to proposed treatment

In early 2011, AAPP and AAOSH entered into a ‘friendly partnership arrangement’ to foster just this kind of collaboration among healthcare providers.  The fact that nearly 15% of attendees at the Summit were dentists suggests the partnership is off to a very good start indeed. […]
